I joined the Dance Warriors Program last month and I am slowly becoming aware and in tune with my inner-self. I feel full-filled, active and gaining confidence. I’ve been wanting to write more about this program and my experience but didn’t how to document it. Today, has been the best class I’ve had in the past six-weeks of the class and that is why I’ve decided to write about it. I’ll begin my explaining the Dance Warrior Program and then I will write about today’s experience.
First, the Dance Warriors program is a 15-week program created and led by, Michelle Morales. I am so thankful for her! The aim of the program is to improve self-confidence and experience the best performance without fear, body-shame or doubt. I believe she is doing amazing work by incorporating her love of dance and her background in psychology. She has an M.S. and PPS. As a school psychologist, professional salsa dancer and coach she has created such a powerful program with Dance Warriors.
it’s been six weeks and I’m already learning to be aware of my self-judgment, learning how to allow myself to say no, incorporating self-love tools and building confidence. I’m slowly learning that it’s OK to be confident and I will not make myself feel small in order to help someone feel better. We have learned and are practicing a choreographed dance to the song, “Cucurrucucú Paloma,” by Willie Colon and Celia Cruz. I am beyond excited. I’ve always enjoyed dancing. When I go to bailes with family or friends, I’m always the first one to pull people along with me to the dance floor. When I was a sophomore in high school, I joined the dance team at my school and it was fun. Committing to a team and keeping your word to practice can be a challenge but once your perform, it makes it worth it.
Now, back to today’s experience. Today, we had Jenny Viveros, visit our class to show us a dance routine called, Latin Burlesque. I was engaged in myself with the dance moves, I had fun and most importantly, I felt sexy! It seems that many of us women are taught that feeling sexy can be wrong, that sexy = sex, or that you need to have a boyfriend or a certain body type to feel sexy. I am unlearning the toxic social conditioning we are taught as little girls. Society’s way of viewing sexy is not the way to live. I believe women should feel sexy in their own skin, no matter your circumstances. Feeling sexy, can not only empower you in some shape or form but boost up your confidence. I enjoyed today’s class because I’ve always wanted to learn to dance in a sexy way and found burlesque fascinating. Learning today’s Latin burlesque session with Jenny was just what I needed. I feel like in some sort of confidence, “high,” and I absolutely love it!
